02 | Show Background

Launched in 1991, the National Pharmaceutical Machinery Exposition (P-MEC China) is hosted by China Pharmaceutical Equipment Industry Association. It is a flagship exhibition strongly supported by the Ministry of Commerce and one of the largest and most influential events for pharmaceutical equipment in China. The 68th edition will be held at Xiamen International Conference & Exhibition Center from October 27 to 29, 2026, with over 150,000 m² of exhibition space and more than 1,800 exhibitors. It covers nine segments including formulation, API, packaging, cleanroom & purification, and testing equipment. Focused on aseptic manufacturing, smart production and energy-efficient green solutions, it serves as a core platform for equipment sourcing and technical alignment across the pharma supply chain.

Mwelding will present our clean piping welding solutions at this Xiamen show, tailored for GMP clean process lines and hygienic orbital welding. We welcome industry visitors for on-site technical discussions and business collaboration.

03 | Key Welding Challenges for Pharmaceutical Piping

1. Unstable weld quality on hygienic piping

Pharmaceutical piping uses special materials such as 316L / 316Lmod hygienic stainless steel, TA2 titanium alloy and carbon steel. Variations in manual welding technique, poor fit-up and inadequate internal shielding gas control often lead to internal weld oxidation, uneven bead profile and slag inclusions, which cause product hold-up and microbial growth. Purified water, WFI and aseptic process lines demand exceptionally smooth, non-leachable and corrosion-resistant weld interiors, complying with GMP, ASME BPE and other sanitary standards — far stricter than general industrial piping.

2. Frequent product changeovers slow production

Pharma piping covers a wide DN range from DN15 to DN500, including sampling branches, formulation lines and large-bore utility piping. Frequent changeovers require re-fixturing with hygienic tooling and re-calibration of welding parameters. Weld quality is highly dependent on certified skilled welders, making capacity ramp-up difficult for high-volume orders.

3. Heavy validation and delivery pressure

All hygienic weld joints on pharma equipment must pass borescope inspection, together with passivation, radiography or penetrant testing to satisfy GMP and equipment validation requirements. Repairing hygienic welds is difficult and easily damages the internal sanitary surface. Non-conforming welds can delay equipment fabrication and project handover for the whole line.

Sanitary weld quality, multi-diameter adaptability and validation deliverables should be managed within one integrated process workflow instead of fixed after welding.

04 | Mwelding: Integrated Clean Orbital Welding Systems for Pharmaceutical Equipment

01 MWF Closed Orbital Tube-to-Tube Welder Series

Designed for thin-wall hygienic 316L / 316Lmod stainless steel tube joints in purified water, WFI, formulation and CIP/SIP circuits. Also suitable for small-bore TA2 titanium clean tube butt welds, max OD Φ219mm. Covers DN6–DN200 clean sampling lines, purified water branches, formulation branches and CIP return lines.

Mwelding MWF closed orbital tube welder

Paired with MWA200 power supply, it stores up to 990 weld programs and generates recommended parameters by diameter, wall thickness and material. Single-sided welding with full penetration; bright oxide-free internal weld bead. Actual results depend on fixturing, internal shielding (high-purity argon for titanium) and site process validation.

02 MWG Open Orbital Tube-to-Tube Welder Series

For medium-to-large bore process piping and utility lines requiring filler metal all-position butt welding, max OD Φ325mm. Ideal for shop prefabrication and field installation during plant retrofits, suitable for DN80–DN300 main product lines, formulation tank inlet/outlet lines and clean steam piping. Selection depends on groove design, wall thickness, material, grip length and available working clearance.

03 MWHF Circumferential Seam Welding Systems

For tube-to-tube, tube-flange, tank nozzle circumferential joints and selected fillet welds where rotary tooling is available. Can be integrated with positioners and filler wire processes for batch prefabrication of formulation tanks, bioreactors and purified water vessels. Welds stainless steel and titanium flanged nozzles for consistent, crevice-free circumferential seams in formulation, fermentation and purification sections.

04 MWP All-Position Tube-to-Tubesheet Welder Series

Developed for tube-to-tubesheet joints in multiple-effect stills, clean steam generators, heat exchangers and bioreactor cooling bundles. Covers stainless steel bundles and TA2 titanium tubes to tubesheets. Custom fixturing based on hole location accuracy, concentricity, tube projection and pitch. Application assessment based on equipment drawings and sanitary acceptance criteria.

05 MWH Heat Exchanger U-Tube Welder Series

For butt and socket joints in dense U-tube bundles of stills, evaporators and fermentation equipment. Supports stainless steel U-tubes and titanium U-coils with compact weld heads and dedicated clamps. Sizing requires tube OD, pitch, bend radius and head access clearance. It is a separate platform from tube-to-tubesheet welders for different station requirements.

06 MWLD Hot Wire TIG Cladding System

For corrosion-resistant overlay cladding on inner surfaces of formulation tanks, purified water vessels and CIP acid/alkali tanks. Custom welding procedures developed per base material, cladding alloy, part geometry and accessibility. Surfaces contacting WFI or aggressive cleaning media require separate validation for material compatibility, dilution control, corrosion resistance and non-leaching sanitary performance.

07 Orbital Welding Carriages & Custom Automated Welding Tooling

For all-position multi-pass field welding of large-bore utility piping, bulk storage tanks and main headers for bioreactor farms. Rail and full system configuration based on diameter, wall thickness, groove, material and site conditions. Suitable for DN200–DN1400 large pipe prefabrication, field installation and custom engineered tooling.

05 | FAQ: Automated Welding for Pharmaceutical Piping

Q1: Which orbital welder is suitable for thin-wall hygienic piping of different pharma materials?

A: For thin-wall 316L / 316Lmod stainless steel and TA2 titanium clean tube butt joints in purified water, WFI, formulation and CIP/SIP circuits, start with the MWF closed orbital system. Use the MWG open model for DN80+ larger bores where filler wire is needed. Verify OD, wall thickness, material and fixturing constraints for selection. Titanium and carbon steel welding require dedicated high-purity shielding packages.

Q2: Can one machine handle both heat exchanger tube-to-tubesheet welds and U-tube welds?

A: No. Tube-to-tubesheet joints use the MWP series. Dense U-tube butt / socket welds use the MWH series. The weld head and clamping architecture differ and are not interchangeable. Separate tooling and shielding procedures are also needed for stainless vs titanium bundles.

Q3: Does an automated welder automatically satisfy GMP hygienic welding requirements?

A: Not by itself. Pharma clean piping and equipment cover purified water, WFI, formulation, fermentation and other service conditions, with stainless steel, titanium, carbon steel and other materials. You still need to follow GMP, ASME BPE and related codes, complete procedure qualification, passivation, borescope inspection and weld record retention. The machine is a tool to deliver consistent welds.

Q4: What is different about titanium and carbon steel piping welding compared with standard hygienic stainless steel?

A: TA2 titanium and carbon steel are highly sensitive to oxygen and nitrogen. They demand higher-purity shielding gas, tighter weld-head sealing and stricter internal back-shielding. The base power hardware may be shared, but fixturing, shielding strategy and weld parameters require separate PQR to avoid brittle oxidized welds, prevent metal ion leaching and maintain sanitary compliance.
